Navigating the Pressures and Stresses of making a living in today’s Economy

WANT TO KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THE PRESSURES AND STRESSES OF MAKING A LIVING IN TODAY’S ECONOMY?

1. DEVELOP A PROACTIVE MIND:

As our economy moves from one that is knowledge based to one more automated, the stress and pressure on our minds to perform has become greater. Outside forces have put our jobs and livelihoods at risk. No one is safe. In order to find our place and thrive in today’s world, we must develop a proactive mind.

2. SET A TARGET:

The first step to navigating pressure and stress is to JUST START by setting a target. Who do you want to become? What types of things and people to you want to move away from? Personally, I set a financial target of revenue for my business (Ingalls Pictures, a video production company). I read it each morning before the work day begins and it allows me to really focus on the right income generating activities such as making cold calls. The result has been the business is on pace to reach the mark, if not surpass it. When setting a target, think BIG, think HUGE! Then, reverse engineer how you’re going to get there down to the daily action necessary to get you there.

3. UNDERSTAND TRIGGERS

The second step to navigating pressure and stress is to understand triggers. What makes you angry? Feeling anxious? Feeling annoyed? Maybe ashamed? These four A’s are the four most detrimental things in our lives. They crush our creativity, obliterate great ideas, and increase our likelihood of every disease. They put our survival at risk. We must think deeply about what triggers one or many of these emotions in our daily lives. What were the circumstances for each? What was the environment and people involved? For myself, it was the social anxiety that killed my ability to communicate effectively during my middle and high school years. I was laughed at and lost respect of my peers because I was in fear of speaking a loud to them. I was lonely in my thoughts and didn’t know where to turn or what to do.

Hugh started Aquinas’s Hockey Program that won a National Championship in year five!

4. USE TOOLS:

The third and final step to navigating pressure and stress is using tools. Once we have understand our triggers, we can use simple tools to prevent the feelings from happening. The first tool is to relax your abs. We hold most of our tension in our abs and it prevents us from gaining a full breath of air, leading to oxygen deprivation of the brain. Second is to smile. Smiling can interrupt those feelings before they happen. Remember, life is good! Smile more!! Third tool is a full 15-second meditative belly-breathe. Breathe in for 6-seconds in. Hold for 2-seconds. Out for 7-seconds. Use these three tools any time of the day. As soon as I started to relax my abs and smile, I was prepared to speak whether just with friends hanging out or in front of a group. Now, I give lectures to college students on entrepreneurship, have a podcast, and lead project meetings. This is only due to the fact that I am able to interrupt those four A’s with a  tool.

 5. LIVE THE LIFE YOU WERE MEANT TO LIVE:

We are increasingly relying on our minds as opposed to our bodies for success today. With that said, the mind must be sharp. As depression and suicide rates sore through the roof today, we must be equipped for anything life brings at us. Death, failure, these are all things we can’t control. We can only control our own words and actions. Following the three strategies above, we can start to be proactive and live the life we were meant to live.
